Few pictures on this board bring together three such different public figures: the New York financier J.P. Morgan, a judge named Dickinson, and the British statesman Viscount Haldane. The record gives no date, and the names come from notes the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, so the identifications deserve some caution. Bain's agency photographed newsworthy people in New York and Washington in the early twentieth century and sent its glass-plate pictures to newspapers. Haldane, who served as Britain's Lord Chancellor around the First World War, would have been a notable guest, so a meeting of this kind may have carried more than social interest.
