A still life of cut flowers, credited to Ruth Atkins, survives here only as a small glass negative whose record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been independently verified. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds the work of a New York news photography service founded around 1899 that sold images to newspapers and magazines. Because such negatives were often filed with minimal detail, the arrangement itself, its setting and its purpose are worth studying closely for clues to the period.
