Few details survive about this flower stand, but the caption ties it to Astor Market, one of New York City's public markets, where vendors sold produce, flowers, and other goods to shoppers in the early twentieth century. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers and magazines, mostly from about 1900 to 1920. The title comes from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the scene is best read as a window onto everyday city commerce of the period.
