The negative records the 1915 Astor Cup race, a sporting contest named for its trophy. It is a glass plate from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, which supplied pictures of current events to newspapers. The title comes from caption cards and has not been independently verified, so details of the course, the competitors, and the results are best checked against period newspapers. Even so, the plate shows how quickly news photography was moving from the sporting field to the printed page in the mid-1910s.
