John Hamilton-Gordon, 7th Earl of Aberdeen, and his wife Ishbel were a prominent couple in Canadian and Irish public life. He served as governor general of Canada from 1893 to 1898, and Ishbel helped found the Victorian Order of Nurses in 1897 and was active in women's organizations. Later, the earl was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1905 to 1915. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency, distributed photographs like this one to newspapers, but the identification comes from unverified caption data, so the occasion and date are uncertain.
