The record names this glass negative "J.S. Sumner," but the title comes from caption cards and data that the Bain News Service supplied and that have not been verified, so the identity of the subject is uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York in the early 1900s as a wire-photo agency that sold news pictures to newspapers. Its pictures were made on glass plates, the standard negative format of the period before flexible film became common. The collection offers a useful view of how press photographs were made and circulated in that era.
