The sitter here is Sumner W. Haynes, identified only by the caption card and the Bain News Service's own notes, which the Library of Congress flags as unverified. The picture is a glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, the format common to Bain's working files. George Grantham Bain founded his news photo agency in New York in 1899, and it supplied newspapers with portraits and event pictures for roughly two decades. Its glass plates are valued today as a record of the faces and occasions that made the news in the early twentieth century.
