The only identifying detail here is the title, "Kaiserin," the German word for empress, which the Bain News Service attached to the negative or its caption card without verification. That makes the subject uncertain, though it suggests a portrait of a German empress, most likely the consort of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so its glass negatives record the images that circulated in the press of that era. The collection as a whole is a useful window onto how news photographs were made and distributed before wire photos became common.
