The only identifying detail on this glass negative is the name W.B. Fitzgerald, which comes from caption cards the Bain News Service prepared, and the record notes that the attribution has not been verified. Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that George Grantham Bain started around 1899 to supply newspapers with pictures of people, events and places, often on short notice. Its glass negatives were typically filed with handwritten or typed cards, and researchers have found that some of those names and places need checking. Because the record gives no date, the most reliable clues to this plate's age are the agency's working years and the 5 x 7 inch glass format it used.
