The caption on this glass negative reads "C.H. Towne," but the Bain News Service notes that supplied the title are unverified, so the identification is uncertain. The initials most plausibly point to Charles Hanson Towne (1877-1949), a New York poet and magazine editor active in literary circles in the early twentieth century. The Bain agency, which operated in New York, sent photographers to record public figures and news events during those decades, so the sitter's public profile is the most useful context. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the exposure remains unknown.
