The only identifying detail for this negative is the name N.J. Bachelder, and the Library of Congress notes that even this comes from unverified data written on the negative or its caption card. No date is recorded. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers around the turn of the twentieth century. Glass negatives of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were the standard working medium of press photographers of the period, so the plate shows how such pictures were made and filed, even though the sitter or scene is not identified.
