The title "Rookies on MAINE" points to a ship named *Maine*, most likely one of the U.S. Navy's battleships, though the record's title is unverified and the picture carries no date. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers in the early twentieth century, shot a great deal of Navy and military material, and "rookies" in that setting usually means new recruits or first-year sailors learning the ship. Because the glass negative is small, the surviving print is best read as a documentary record of daily shipboard life rather than a studio portrait. Compare it with other Bain negatives of naval subjects to narrow down the ship and year.
