Art Young, the name given for the sitter here, was one of the best-known political cartoonists of the 1910s, drawing for the socialist monthly *The Masses* with a crowded, biting pen-and-ink style aimed at war profiteers, police and the wealthy. In 1918 he stood trial with other *Masses* editors under the Espionage Act, a case that ended in hung juries. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, produced glass negatives like this one for newspapers of the period. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the identification should be treated as provisional.
