What sets this negative apart is its title, which names a Scottish peerage rather than a specific person, and several men have held the Earl of Aberdeen title. The record notes that the attribution comes from Bain News Service caption cards and is unverified, so the sitter cannot be confirmed from the file alone. The best-known bearer during the years the agency worked was John Hamilton-Gordon, 7th Earl of Aberdeen, who served as Governor General of Canada and later as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Bain's New York staff photographed public figures and news events from about 1899 to 1932, so this plate is best read as one of those news portraits.
