The name Helen Hughes is the only identifying detail on this glass negative. The Library of Congress notes that it comes from unverified information on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its small format, five by seven inches or smaller, was typical of press photography of that era, when pictures were made quickly and sent out to papers across the country.
