The name on this negative, Helen Stanley, is the only identifying detail the record offers, and the Bain News Service attached it from its own caption cards, so it has not been independently verified. The plate is a small glass negative, five by seven inches or smaller, the format Bain's photographers commonly used for portraits and news pictures. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency in 1899, and it supplied newspapers with images of public figures, theater people, and current events through the 1910s and 1920s. Because the date is missing, viewers should treat the sitter's identity and the picture's timing as open questions to check against the Bain caption cards.
