The record identifies the sitter only as W. Damrosch, which almost certainly refers to Walter Damrosch, the conductor and composer who led the New York Symphony Society and was a prominent figure at the Metropolitan Opera in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced many images of musicians, performers and public figures for newspapers, so this glass negative belongs to that busy commercial trade. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown. Later, Damrosch became well known to a wide audience through his radio music appreciation programs for young listeners.
