The sitter is named only as Mrs. Mary A. Henderson, and the record notes that this title comes from caption cards and negative labels that the Bain News Service supplied, so her identity has not been independently verified. The picture is a glass negative of the kind Bain's New York agency produced in volume from the late 1890s into the 1910s, when it supplied news photographs to newspapers. Notice the small format, which made glass plates practical for quick newspaper work, and the sitter's direct gaze, which reflects the formal portrait conventions of the period.
