A portrait of a woman identified only as Mrs. A.T. Waite, her name taken from caption cards the Bain News Service wrote on the negatives, so the identification is unverified. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899 that sold news and feature photographs to newspapers, and its glass-plate negatives, now at the Library of Congress, document early twentieth-century American life. The record gives no date, so the sitter's exact identity and the occasion of the portrait remain uncertain, but the negative's format and origin place it within that busy commercial studio's output.
