Few places in lower Manhattan were as noisy as the Curb Market, where brokers who did not trade on the main exchange dealt in securities outdoors along the curb, which gave the market its name. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negative, so the exact scene is unconfirmed. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its pictures of city streets and crowds remain a useful record of how New Yorkers worked.
