The only identifying detail in this record is the name J.J. Carty, taken from caption cards or the negative itself and not yet verified. The sitter's role, the date, and the occasion are all unrecorded. The picture is a glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, made for George Grantham Bain's New York news photo service, which supplied newspapers with pictures of current events and public figures from about 1899 until the early 1910s. Its rapid, large-volume output means many portraits from this collection are known more by their captions than by documented histories.
