Hartford's horse-drawn streetcars ran on iron rails laid down the middle of the city's streets, and this view captures one of them on Farmington Avenue in the early 1890s, sometime between the end of 1891 and mid-1892. Farmington Avenue was a residential and increasingly fashionable route running west from the city center, so the line served a growing district of homes and businesses. Before electric trolleys spread through American cities in the late 1880s and 1890s, teams of horses or mules pulled these cars, and a single line might need dozens of animals working in shifts. The photograph is a useful record of that transitional moment, when the horse was still the engine of urban transit.
