Car No. 10 of the Hartford and Wethersfield Horse Railroad stands at Lathrop's on Asylum Street in Hartford, Connecticut, in a photograph dated to between late 1891 and mid-1892. At that time, horse-drawn streetcars ran on iron rails along many American city streets, pulled by teams that had to be fed, stabled and replaced daily. Electric trolleys were spreading quickly through the 1890s and soon made the horse car obsolete, so a view like this records street transit in its last years of dominance. It is a useful reminder of how much daily city travel depended on animal power.
