A young child sits behind the wheel of a toy automobile in this glass negative, a playful scene from the years when the motorcar was still a novelty on many American streets. The picture is part of the National Photo Company Collection, the archive of a commercial studio that documented Washington, D.C., and its surroundings in the early twentieth century. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of the period, and the record notes that streaks and other blemishes may appear from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
