This 1912 print is a portrait of Pat Maloney, identified in its caption as a member of the New York club of the American League. That club was then known as the Highlanders, a name it used until it became the Yankees in 1913. Baseball portraits from the 1910s like this one were often made for team publicity, trade cards and newspapers, when photographs of players were becoming a common way for fans to follow individual athletes. The studio-style pose and the team reference show how the sport was building its public image in the years before the Highlanders changed their name.
