Cincinnati, Covington and Newport sat on the Ohio River in 1866, just a year after the Civil War ended, and the three cities were tightly tied together by ferries and the Ohio River bridge then under way. Cincinnati was among the largest cities in the Midwest, and its economy rested on pork packing, which earned it the nickname Porkopolis, along with breweries, clothing manufacture, furniture, and machine shops. Across the water, Covington and Newport on the Kentucky side served as residential neighborhoods and small manufacturing towns, and many workers crossed daily to jobs on the Ohio shore. Steamboats still carried freight and passengers on the river, though railroads were steadily taking over the trade that had made the city rich.
