Conneaut Harbor, on the Lake Erie shore in Ashtabula County, Ohio, was a busy ore and coal port in 1901. Iron ore arriving by lake freighter from the Upper Peninsula and Minnesota ranges was unloaded at the docks and carried south by rail to the steel mills and furnaces of the Mahoning and Shenango valleys, while coal moved north in the opposite direction. The harbor's piers, rail yards and grain and lumber trade made it one of the main shipping points on the Ohio lakefront, and the town depended on that traffic for jobs and growth. Conneaut's residents in 1901 knew the place first as a working harbor, where the sound of ore hoists and locomotives marked the rhythm of the season.
