A child of the Orient" is the title Frances Benjamin Johnston gave this photoprint, though its date is not recorded, so the exact moment it was made remains uncertain. Johnston, a Washington, D.C., photographer, worked from the 1890s into the early twentieth century and made many portraits in costume and posed settings. Titles like this one reflect the Orientalist taste of that period, when studio pictures often used dress and props to evoke distant lands and peoples. Viewers today may notice how the title frames its young sitter through a Western idea of the East, a convention worth reading with some caution.
