Sheet music covers of this kind were a popular way to carry political feeling into parlors, and this one is distinctive for its title, *Song of the Union*, which its Pennsylvania-born composer, John M. Crosland, copyrighted in 1860. The lithograph pairs the Union theme with George Washington, the Constitution, the United States Capitol, and an eagle, a combination that points to the national anxiety of that election year, when sectional quarrels over slavery were pulling at the country's bonds. The publisher, Beck & Lawton of Philadelphia, sold such patriotic songs to a wide middle-class market. The print is also listed in Bernard F. Reilly's catalog of American political prints, which places it among the graphic works of its moment.
