Newton D. Baker, who served as Secretary of War under President Woodrow Wilson, is the subject of this glass negative dated December 4, 1918, about three weeks after the armistice ended fighting in Europe. Baker oversaw the rapid expansion of the American Army during the war, including the draft and the mobilization of millions of men. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency whose glass negatives later formed the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The identification comes from the agency's caption cards and has not been independently verified.
