The caption places these German prisoners at Verdun, the fortified town in northeastern France that became the center of a grueling battle in 1916. The record gives no date, and the title comes from notes the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, which the Library of Congress has not verified. Still, the subject fits that period, when captured German soldiers were held and moved behind French lines after some of the battle's fiercest fighting. The glass negative belongs to the Bain collection, the archive of a New York press photo agency that supplied war images to American newspapers and magazines.
