The caption names Gatti Cosazza, most likely Giulio Gatti-Casazza, the Italian-born impresario who ran the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1908 to 1935. The record does not give a date, but the Bain News Service, which made this glass negative, photographed New York public figures during those decades. Gatti-Casazza oversaw the company through its move to the new house at Lincoln Center's predecessor site and its long run with major European singers and conductors, so a portrait of him from this period documents a central figure in American opera.
