The only identification for this glass negative is the name Irving Kaufman, taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its plates, so the sitter's identity has not been independently verified. Kaufman was a popular American vocalist who recorded for several phonograph companies in the 1910s and 1920s, when recording singers were becoming familiar faces through newspapers and magazines. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, supplied photographs to newspapers from about 1900 into the 1920s, and its glass plates show the look of that era's press images. Treat the caption as a starting point rather than a settled fact.
