The caption on this glass negative gives only the initials "P.E. Calles," a title the Bain News Service recorded on its own cards and that has not been verified. The initials most likely refer to Plutarco Elías Calles, who served as president of Mexico from 1924 to 1928 and remained a powerful political figure for years afterward. The Bain News Service supplied news photographs of visiting dignitaries and other newsworthy people to newspapers, so a plate like this was probably made for publication rather than as a formal studio portrait. With no date in the record, the occasion remains unknown.
