Few portraits in the Bain collection carry a name as recognizable as this one: Fiorello H. LaGuardia, the New York congressman who went on to serve as mayor of New York City from 1934 to 1945. The record gives only the title, taken from caption cards that Bain News Service attached to its glass negatives, and it provides no date, so the sitting itself cannot be placed with certainty. Bain's agency worked for newspapers in the early twentieth century and documented politicians, public events and everyday city life, which makes LaGuardia's appearance in the files a useful marker of the period when he was rising in public life.
