Devil's Den is a jumble of granite boulders on the southern end of Little Round Top, at Gettysburg, and it became one of the most fiercely contested spots of the battle's second day, July 2, 1863. Confederate sharpshooters and Texas and Alabama troops clambered among the rocks to strike at Union lines, while Federal soldiers fought back from the same stones. The rough terrain, which made it so hard to hold, also made it a place where the fighting broke into small, close struggles, and the boulders still bear scars from that day.
