A woman stands at bat while Fannie Gerhart crouches behind the plate in this glass negative, which the record credits to "Mrs. Richie at bat." The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented news and public life in the early twentieth century, made this picture when women's baseball drew crowds to exhibition games and touring Bloomer Girls teams. The names come from unverified notes on the negative sleeves, so they are best read as the company's labels rather than confirmed identities. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the natural decay of its original coatings.
