Two boys stand together in this stereograph, one gripping a baseball bat and the other wearing a catcher's mitt, which makes the pairing of batter and catcher easy to read even though the scene is posed. Stereographs like this were made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly different side-by-side images into a single three-dimensional scene. Sold widely in the first decade of the 1900s, they gave home viewers a close look at everyday American life, and baseball, already the national pastime, appears often in them. The record dates the image only to between 1900 and 1910, so its exact setting and the boys' names remain unknown.
