At bat is Mrs. Richie, with Fannie Gearhart serving as catcher behind the plate in this 1919 glass negative. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded sports and public life in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image, and the names come from the studio's own notes, which have not been independently verified. Women's baseball exhibition games drew crowds in that period, and pictures like this one show women taking on a sport often seen as a male preserve. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
