*Pointers* takes its subject from the hunting dog itself, a breed trained to freeze in a rigid stance when it catches the scent of game birds, and the print presents that pose as the moment of the hunt. Nathaniel Currier published it in New York around 1846, when his firm was producing large numbers of sporting and rural scenes for a middle-class market that wanted affordable pictures. The artist is identified only by the initial "P." on the image, so the maker remains unknown. The hand coloring, applied over the printed outline, was typical of the firm's output in the 1840s.
