The record gives only the name "Isabella," so the sitter is not identified, and the title is the main clue to the picture's subject. It was published by N. Currier in New York around 1844, when his shop was producing large numbers of inexpensive lithographs for a broad public. Many sheets from this period were hand-colored after printing, so the tints on a copy like this one show how the finished print was made by hand. The Gale Research catalog raisonné lists it as number 3376 among the firm's 1840s output.
