Beatrice Cenci was a young Roman noblewoman executed in 1599 after she was convicted in the killing of her father, Francesco, whose abuse of his family was notorious. Her case drew lasting attention through Percy Bysshe Shelley's verse tragedy *The Cenci* (1819) and the many painted copies and engravings that followed. This hand-colored lithograph was issued by the New York firm Currier & Ives, which sold inexpensive prints to American households, and its color was applied by hand after printing.
