Known only by the single name "Fanny," this hand-colored lithograph was issued by N. Currier in New York around 1846. The bare first name suggests a celebrity whose identity needed no surname on the sheet, and the most likely subject is the Austrian dancer Fanny Elssler, whose American tour of 1840 to 1842 set off a wave of enthusiasm for her performances and related novelty goods. Currier's firm produced many such portraits of public figures, with color added by hand to keep them affordable for home buyers. Worth noticing is how that hand coloring gave a mass-produced print the look of a personal keepsake.
