Titled simply "Laura," this hand-colored lithograph gives little beyond its name, so the sitter's identity cannot be confirmed from the print alone. Nathaniel Currier published it in New York around 1846, when his firm produced inexpensive prints that were colored by hand in batches and sold to a broad middle-class market. Prints of this kind often took their names from literature or poetry, so the title may point to a sentimental ideal rather than a documented person. The Currier & Ives catalog raisonné lists it as number 3735.
