St. Patrick appears here under two names on one sheet, the English "St. Patrick" and the Spanish "San Paticio," a pairing that sets this print apart from many religious subjects Currier & Ives issued. The New York firm, run by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives, sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, and its saint images spoke to the Irish Catholic community that grew in American cities after the emigration of the 1840s. The record does not name the artist or explain why both titles appear, so the bilingual lettering is the detail most worth studying.
