The caption card attached to this c1887 photographic print gives the sitter's name as Patrick Fitzgerald, but the record marks that identification as unverified, so the name is best read as a lead rather than a settled fact. Portraits from the 1880s were usually studio work, made with long exposures that required sitters to hold still against painted backdrops and posed props. Studios of the period produced such images in large numbers for family albums, and many sitters survive today only through handwritten notes like this one.
