Few recruiting posters of the First World War speak so directly to short men as this one, which invites men between 5 feet and 5 feet 3 inches to join a Bantam Battalion. Printed in Bristol by J.W. Arrowsmith and issued through a recruiting office in Stroud, it holds up Nelson and Lord Roberts as proof that small stature need not limit service. The bantam battalions were formed to take men below the usual height standard, a measure that drew both pride and some ridicule. A newspaper clipping headed "Gallant Bantams" is pasted on the back, a reminder of how these units were reported at home.
