A bearded man in a stiff, pleated ruff stares out from this copy of an older painting, a collar style that was fashionable in the late 1500s and early 1600s, so the original was probably a historical portrait. Mathew Brady's studio made the daguerreotype between 1844 and 1860, a period when photographers often copied paintings and engravings for institutions and collectors. The small sixth-plate size and gold toning, which strengthened the surface and warmed the tones, were standard features of the era. The plate was transferred from the U.S. War College in 1920 and is now held by the Library of Congress.
