Tiled name signs set into subway walls were built to do a practical job: riders hurrying through a crowd could find their stop by the station name spelled out in colored tile. The New York subway opened in October 1904, and its platforms were lined with tile from the start, which made the stations easier to clean and softened the look of the underground. A street-level mosaic like this one carried the same craft up to the sidewalk, marking the way down. Look closely at the lettering and borders, which often vary from station to station and show how much individual design went into a system that carried millions of riders a year.
