This 1921 glass negative records a portrait of a Belgian nobleman, Baron de Cartier de Marchienne, whose name appears in the record as "Cheu de Wauters d'Oplinter." He served as Belgium's diplomatic representative in Washington during the early 1920s, when the capital was hosting postwar diplomacy. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington for several decades, made many such portraits of officials and visitors for newspapers and public use. The record notes that the title comes from unverified data on the negative sleeve, and the glass shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating.
